The 2019 college football will officially begin this weekend, and there is a great game on the Week 1 schedule. The No. 16 Auburn Tigers will meet up with the No. 11 Oregon Ducks at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for one of the biggest games of the season. The winner of this game will jump in the rankings, while the loser might have their championship dreams ended.
Auburn finished just 8-5 last season in its sixth year under head coach Gus Malzahn. The Tigers are hoping to make a return to the SEC Championship Game this season, but they have a lot of holes on this roster.
Oregon finished the 2018 season with a record of 9-4, with all of those losses coming in Pac-12 play. The Ducks consistently put on a show with their offense, but their defense will be needed in this game. Auburn is a 3.5-point favorite over Oregon in the series opener.
Herbert Leading Ducks Offense
The Oregon Ducks have a lot of great offensive players on their roster, but none better than quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert threw for 3,151 yards a season ago and had 29 touchdown passes. The tall and talented quarterback will likely be the first quarterback taken in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Running back CJ Verdell should be a great compliment to Herbert after he ran for over 1,000 yards a season ago. This Oregon Ducks team should score a ton of points this season.
Oregon gave up 27.0 points per game during the 2018 regular season, and that just won’t get the job done. The Ducks didn’t lose as many talented players on the defensive side of the ball, and they aren’t facing a great offense in this game. If Oregon can give their offense a chance, Herbert and company can deliver a win.
Auburn Defense Should Be Legit
Speaking of defense, the Auburn Tigers should have one of the best units in the country this season. Auburn is an SEC team and always knows how to deliver and provide some heavy-hitting on that side of the ball. The Tigers gave up less than 20 points per game a season ago, and they will put some pressure on Herbert and the Oregon offense in this game.
Auburn lost a lot of offensive weapons in the offseason, including quarterback Jarrett Stidham. True freshman Bo Nix has been chosen to lead the Auburn offense this season, and there will likely be some growing pains.
Look for the Tigers to run the ball a lot in this game to try and take some pressure off of Nix. Auburn has a slew of talented running backs, and all of them should fare well against the Oregon defense.
Herbert, Ducks Win Season Opener
These two teams both have national championship aspirations this season, and a victory in this game could propel them to a great campaign. Auburn has a more experienced team, but Oregon has the best player on the field in Herbert. Herbert should be able to pick apart this Auburn defense and lead his team to a small upset victory. Bet the Oregon Ducks +3.5 to beat the Auburn Tigers in the season opener.
