The inside bets are all of the possible wagers you can make by placing your chips inside (or on the very edge of) the main 1-36 number area of the layout. Placing a bet on the number 4, for example, would be classed as an inside bet. These bets return bigger payouts than the outside bets, but the chances of you hitting them are much lower.

If you have a small bankroll you should consider placing several smaller bets on a variety of numbers rather than a single large bet. • Straight Up bets are wagers made on a single number only. • Double Street bets expand the regular street bet by placing your chips on the intersecting line between two rows rather than just on the line to the left of a single row. Your bet then covers all six numbers on the two adjacent rows (such as 1-6). Payouts for a double street bet are made at 5 to 1, and the odds of hitting are 16.2% in European/French roulette or 15.8% in the American game.
• Corner bets mean making a wager on four numbers that form a square on the layout, such as 1, 2, 4 and 5. To do this, you place your chip in the middle of the two lines that intersect the four numbers. The payout for these bets is 8 to 1, and you have a 10.8% chance of a win in European roulette or 10.5% on an American wheel.
• Basket or Five Number bets are only available in American roulette, and covers the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. To place a basket bet you place your chips on the corner of the layout between the 0 and 1. The probability of a win is 13.2%, for a return of 6 to 1. The “la partage” rule comes into play when the ball lands on zero. Players who have placed chips on even-money outside bets such as red/black, odd/even, or high/low are given the option to receive half of their bet back in this scenario, which reduces the house edge of these bets to 1.35%.

If you choose NOT to receive half of your bet back, the “en prison” rule will be in effect on the next spin. All bets that were placed on the even-money outside bets mentioned are now imprisoned and will be returned in full if they are a winner on the next spin. You do not receive any winnings, however – only your original bet back.

Unfortunately, none of the common US-facing live dealer gaming providers currently offers French roulette. If you can find this version available at a trustworthy casino though, it offers better odds than even European roulette.
