About Craps

Craps was brought to America by settlers. It was developed from the old English game with its origins dating back to the Crusades (1096-1291). First known as “crapaud”, which in French means “toad” as a reference to the position one used to make when playing, it was brought to New Orleans by Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville, a gambler and politician from a wealthy family. Craps was played on streets and over time, certain rules were changed to make the game better. When it comes to the online version of the game, it features a table with a layout and dice virtually rolled. Players will choose fields on the layout and place their bets on them.

How to Play Craps

You will hear that Craps is one of the easiest casino games to learn. However, you should know that there are over 40 bets you can make while playing Craps, so it is of the uttermost importance to learn how to play. It starts with a player placing a bet on the Passline field and rolling the dice. This is a so-called come out roll and it determines the round. If the numbers on the dice total 7 or 11, you win and get 1 unit for every unit you have bet. If the total is 2, 3 or 12, you lose. Since there are more ways to win than to lose during the come out roll, you will have the advantage over the casino in this game.

If you get any other total of numbers on the dice, you will play the game called the Point. A black puck will be placed on the number you got as a total, and in order to win, you will have to get that number again. You can roll the dice until the total appears, but if you get 7, you will lose your bet. If you get the number, you win 1 unit for every unit wagered.

You can also play the Don’t Pass bet which is the opposite of the Passline bet. If you get 2 or 3 in the first roll, you win even cash. Should a total is 7 or 11, you lose and 12 is a push. For all other numbers, you continue to roll the dice in the Point game until you get the point or 7. Unlike with Passline, if 7 comes up before the point, you win.

You can place side bets too, such as the field bet you can place on the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Practically, you bet that in the next roll of the dice any of these numbers will appear. Should any of these appear, you win even cash. This bet can pay double or even triple if 2 or 12 comes up. If 5, 6, 7 or 8 comes up, you will lose your entire bet. Another side bet is Big 6 or Big 8, which can be placed during the Point game. Just place your bet on Big 6 or Big 8 and if 6 or 8 comes up before 7, you will win even cash. The Place bet is a type of bet you can also place during the Point game. It allows you to bet on all other numbers and if a number you placed your bet on appears before 7, you win 9:5, 7:5 or 7:6.

One of the most complex bets is the Come bet. You place your bet on the Come field and if you get 7 or 11, you win while 2, 3 or 12 loses. If you get to the Point game, your bet is placed on one of the Point numbers and if this number comes up, you can win 2:1, 3:2 or 6:5. The Don’t Come bet is the opposite of the Come bet. There are also Proposition bets where you bet on rolling the two same numbers. Although these bets can pay up to 30:1, the odds of winning while playing such a bet are extremely low.

Finally, you can play Free Odds bets which can be placed only after a Passline or Don’t Pass bet or a Come or Don’t Come bet is played. This type of bet comes with a zero house edge which makes it a great betting option. Keep in mind that you won’t see this bet and its payouts on the table layout, but most online and land-based casinos offer it. Playing Free Odds bets increases your total wager, so you can get your original bet increased by 1x, 2x or 3x and at some casinos, wagers can be up to 100x bigger than the original bets and payouts will be awarded accordingly.

Basic Craps Strategy

Craps may seem as an easy game to learn, but you should know that it is not an easy one to master. You can start playing it by placing the simple bets at lower values and once you learn how to play it, wager higher amounts. First and foremost, learn the basic rules and the bet types. Keep in mind that different bets come with different odds of winning. The house edge varies from 1.40% which is case with Passline, Don’t Pass, Come and Don’t Come bets. Field bets come with a house edge of 5.60% while with Big 6 or Big 8 bets the house edge increases to 9.10%.

If you are a beginner, you should start playing Craps with the bets coming with the lowest house edge. Once you have learned the ropes, you can go for more advanced strategies and riskier betting options.

Craps Online Variants

Although you may love the atmosphere at a Craps table in a land-based casino, online Craps at home can also provide you with an entertaining gaming experience. Here is the list of the game variations you can play.

Bank Craps

This variation of the game is also known as Las Vegas Craps. It uses a special layout and players have to place bets against the house. The biggest difference is the wire stretched above the table where the dice are rolled. The game variant comes with the house edge of around 1.4%.

Crapless Craps

Crapless Craps is the simple version of the game with 2, 3, 11 and 12 on the come out roll taken as points. You win if you get 7. However, this Craps variant comes with a house edge which is 4x higher than the one the standard game of Craps has.

High Point Craps

In this variation of the game, 2 or 3 in the come out roll are ignored, so you will roll until another total appears. If you get 11 or 12 in the come out roll, you win. The house edge of this Craps variant is 2.35%.

Die Rich Craps

Also known as Fading Craps or Money Craps, this is the game variant suitable for high-rollers.

Simplified Craps

In this variation of the game, you win if 2, 3, 10, 11 or 12 come up. If you get 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, you lose. The variant comes with a house edge of 2.8%.

New York Craps

This version of the game is played in New York, the UK and the Bahamas. Players are not allowed to play Place Bets or Come and Don’t Come bets and they have to play on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. The house edge for this variation of the game is 5%.
